I recently used Compassionate Care for my 17.5yr old dog. I had never been through the experience before and was devastated. From the initial contact to the very end, every single person i interacted with poured us with love and compassion. The vet who came to our home was so patient and kind. She made us feel comfortable and at ease. I cannot say enough about this amazing business. It’s hard to find great businesses now days and people you can trust, especially with a loved one. I truly appreciate every single person who helped my boy cross peacefully and with love. Thank you!

What Our Clients Are Saying

The professional and caring team at Compassionate Care made a very sad circumstance better. They provided a peaceful end to our beloved Finn in our home. Beth P., DVM provided a sense of calm, dignity, respect, and efficiency....for which we are grateful. Joseph W. who collected Finn afterwards was equally caring and respectful.

Hopefully, you won't need their services any time soon, but when you do they're the ones to call.

Thomas Mannix

Enormous gratitude for Dr. Wong. She came in the night and was kind, gentle, and conscientious. Our beloved Dobby was always terrified of being handled by veterinarians...

Susan Remmers & Gillian Leichtling

We will never be able to give enough stars to this company. They accommodated us twice in moving our appointment to an earlier date and time, without any hesitation.

Greg Harris and Steve Kopkau

It’s been almost 24 hours since Jess departed, and I’ve already given your company’s name to several friends who will be facing that difficult decision in the months to come, and I will continue to sing your praises. His dog groomer and I have become good friends and I’ll be sure to give your card to her so she can pass it along to her many clients who will eventually need your services...

When Is The Right Time

Am I making the right decision?

Deciding to say goodbye to a pet can be a difficult decision accompanied by guilt and other emotions.

Consulting with your regular veterinarian is important, as they will evaluate your pet's medical history, physical condition, quality of life, and prognosis.

However, pet owners often intuitively know when it is the right time for their pet and themselves

It's important to watch for physical signs of pain or discomfort, such as increased respiratory or heart rate, loss of appetite, lack of mobility, incontinence, and disinterest in usual activities.

If a pet is no longer drinking water or having difficulty breathing, especially open mouthed breathing or abnormally heavy panting, it's crucial to seek immediate veterinary attention.

Please feel free to contact us if you require some guidance about making this important decision.

 In-Home Pet Euthanasia FAQs

How do I know if my pet is in pain?

Indications of pain can range from subtle to obvious. Signs may include changes in appetite, mobility, and grooming. Lack of interest in activities or vocalizing may also indicate pain. Increased heart rate, respiratory rate, and/or panting can also be observed. It is important to consult your veterinarian if you believe your pet may be experiencing pain or discomfort, especially if they are receiving medication for pain that you feel is not adequately controlling it.

How do I know if the time is right for saying goodbye? Am I making the right decision?

Making the decision to say goodbye to a pet is incredibly challenging and often accompanied by feelings of guilt.

There is no exact formula to determine the precise timing for this decision. Consulting with your regular veterinarian is the first step, as they can evaluate your pet’s medical history, physical condition, quality of life, and prognosis.

While physical signs such as increased respiratory or heart rate, loss of appetite, decreased mobility, incontinence, and disinterest in usual activities can be indicators of pain or discomfort, pet owners often develop an intuitive sense of when it’s the right time for their pet and their family.

Two critical conditions that require immediate attention are when the pet refuses to drink water (indicating dehydration) or experiences difficulty breathing, especially open-mouthed breathing or heavy panting.

If you need guidance about making this important decision, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

How far ahead should I schedule a pet euthanasia appointment?

We know how hard it is to make the decision for euthanasia, and many families ask the question of how to handle the appointment logistics along with the decision.  In most cases, we can accommodate same-day appointments.  The earlier you call in the day, the more helpful, and our Care Specialist staff come on duty at 6 am to take our clients’ calls.

Our schedule varies from day to day, so there is no general guideline for when the doctor might be able to arrive at your home from the time that you call to make the appointment.

Calling 1-2 days in advance is helpful, especially if you have a preferred timeframe for the appointment, the city you live in is 45 minutes or more outside of Portland, and/or you would like cremation assistance for a large pet.  However, we never want to discourage you from contacting us anytime you need assistance.

How much does pet euthanasia cost?

Because there are several factors that impact our service cost, it is not possible to give a one-size-fits-all answer.  We want to support you through this difficult time, so please call our office or contact us through our website, and we can provide a personalized answer to your questions.
