What is Aquamation?
Eco-Friendly Pet Cremation
Compassionate Care utilizes an eco-friendly cremation process also known as Aquamation, alkaline hydrolysis and green cremation.
Like natural decomposition, aquamation is slower and gentler than flame-based cremation. This process utilizes water, a small amount of alkali and mild agitation to specifically break down tissues.
Aquamation produces no greenhouse gas or toxic emissions, it has 1/10th the carbon footprint and uses a fraction of the energy compared to traditional flame-based cremation.
Because non-tissue items such as collars, clothing, blankets and even flowers do not break down during this gentle process, they must be removed before the pet is cremated via aquamation.

We offer two categories of cremation services:
- Private Cremation:
Your beloved pet is individually cremated, ensuring that only their cremains are returned to you.
- Communal Cremation:
Your pet is respectfully cremated alongside other pets. The communal cremains are respectfully scattered for you.
In the spirit of our Portland’s pet-loving and environmentally-conscious communities, Aquamation is a wonderful way to honor our beloved companions as well as our world.

How will I receive my pet’s cremains back?
Our standard return container is a biodegradable pressed natural fiber box made from sustainably harvested mulberry bark.
The cremains are contained within a biodegradable bag inside making it suitable for burying, and it is also sturdy enough to keep indefinitely in normal home conditions.
